DA, Doctor of Arts

Research and doctoral education have become increasingly popular at the University of Art and Design Helsinki. At the beginning of 2009 there were more than two hundred students aiming at a doctoral degree, and in total 72 Doctors of Arts had completed the degree.

In terms of percentage, the University of Art and Design Helsinki is the most international of all Finnish universities, especially in its postgraduate programmes – in January 2008 the University reached a level of 18 per cent foreign doctoral students. In addition to international seminars and conferences, doctoral students are encouraged to include a period abroad into their research project.

The studies leading to the Doctor of Arts degree can be taken in all fields represented at the University. A person with a completed Master’s degree or a corresponding degree in Finland or abroad may apply for our doctoral degree programme. Further information about doctoral studies at TaiK.

How to apply

Two annual application deadlines 15 March and 15 September

The Spring deadline is for those aiming to begin doctoral studies in autumn term and the Autumn deadline for those aiming to begin in the spring term.

Those who have a Master’s degree either from the University of Art and Design Helsinki or from another Finnish university or an accredited degree from a foreign institution are permitted to apply for DA studies.

As full-time studies the Doctor of Arts degree should not take more than four years. Further information about applying to doctoral studies.

Non-degree studies

It is possible to apply for separate courses at TaiK without taking a degree. Non-degree students may attend lectures and carry out project related to the courses to which they have been accepted. Further information, please see www.taik.fi > Studing at TaiK > Non-degree studies
