At the first stage, applicants send in
1. a portfolio (not applicable for New Media programmes)
2. two copies of the signed application form
3. two copies of study plan
4. two copies of CV
5. two copies of each necessary certificate (degree certificate & transcript).
6. An original language certificate must also be provided where necessary.
Eligibility: Prerequisite Degrees and Studies
To be eligible to apply for a Master’s degree programme at TaiK, applicants must have completed one of the following degrees:
* Degree from a Finnish university of applied sciences (AMK)
* Bachelor’s degree from a Finnish university
* Master’s degree from a Finnish university
* Foreign education equivalent to one of the abovementioned degrees
Please deliver your degree certificate and the transcript (the list of all the courses completed for your degree).
Time of completion of degree used as basis for eligibility
The degree used as basis for eligibility must have been completed by the beginning of the application period. Applicants must submit complete applications with all the necessary appendices during the application period.
Candidates who meet one of the following criteria may also be eligible to apply:
* 180 completed ECTS credits of university-level studies
You may apply without having graduated from a degree, if you have completed at least 180 ECTS credits of applicable studies at a university. Enclose a transcript (list of the studies you have completed).
If you are going to graduate soon and if your university uses other credit units than ECTS, please use the following basis.
* Other equivalent studies or skills and knowledge
The application must include certified copies of school, work or course certificates or proof of leisure activities that the applicant considers to be significant for the selection process and that show that the applicant has skills and knowledge equivalent to the abovementioned degrees.
Language Certificate
Applicants whose native language is Finnish, Swedish or English do not have to complete language tests. Similarly, those who have completed the degree used as basis for eligibility in Finnish, Swedish or English do not have complete language tests. Applicants whose prior studies are in English must have this mentioned on the degree certificate, in the transcript or in a separate official letter from the institution. All other applicants must prove their proficiency in English, Finnish or Swedish by producing ONE of the following language certificates.
English language test:
- Computer-based TOEFL test, min. total score of 213
- Paper-based TOEFL test, min. total score of 550
- TOEFL iBT, min. total score of 79–80
- IELTS (Academic), min. overall band score of 6
- CPE language certificate: A, B and C.
TOEFL and IELTS (Academic) test results are valid for two years from the test date. The CPE certificate is valid indefinitely.

Finnish and Swedish language tests:
- National Certificate of Language Proficiency in Finnish, min. level 3-4.
- National Certificate of Language Proficiency in Swedish, min. level 3-4.
These national certificates are valid for several years, and may only be completed in Finland.

Portfolio (not for New Media programmes)
In the portfolio, applicants display work that shows their artistic expression and design skills. The portfolio must contain diverse samples of the applicant’s previous scientific, professional and/or artistic activity.
Study Plan
Applicants must write up a study plan of a minimum of one A4 page in length, explaining why they wish to apply to the degree programme in question, what their particular interests are in the field, and what their hopes and expectations are regarding studies at the University of Art and Design Helsinki. The plan should explain the applicant’s personal strengths, areas of interest, artistic and design visions, artwork perspectives and artistic objectives.
Curriculum Vitae
Applications must include the applicant’s CV, indicating personal data, educational background, work experience, exhibitions, publications and articles, awards and grants, study trips and positions of trust.
