Dylan Kwok has won the “DesignSmart Young Design Talent Award” in the Hong Kong Young Design Talent Awards 2009. Kwok has recently graduated from the MA studies in spatial design of the University of Art and Design.

Martin Gimpl won the first prize for the best MA thesis dealing with HCI topics in the annual contest organized by the Finnish chapter of ACM’s special interest group on human computer interaction (SIGCHI). The topic of the winning work was “Stripes – A Conceptual Operating System User Interface”. Gimpl has graduated from the MA programme in New Media of the Media Lab.
The winner was announced in the SIGCHI fall seminar and the World’s Usability day.

Shira Igell, a MA student in photography at the University of Art and Design Helsinki is the winner of the second edition of City of Ville de Levallois - Epson Photography Award.
City of Levallois - Epson Photography Award is an international competition for promising artistless than 35 years.
The award consists in a 10 000 € grant and in production of a solo show during the festival Photo Levallois.

Saara Wang, a photographer student at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, won the international competition Its#photo in Italy. The prize is 10 000 e and includes a professional shoot with a famous photographer.
Running for the fifth year, the photo competition involved some of the best photography schools from all around the world.

The winner of the Designer´s Nest competition 2009 is Elina Määttänen who is now beginning her third year in BA studies in fashion and clothing design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki.
Designer´s Nest is one of the most important design competitions for design students in Nordic countries and an integral part of the international CPH Vision fashion fair.

Aalto University visual identity contest gathered alltogether 117 contest entries from the students, staff and alumni of the Helsinki School of Economics, University of Art and Design Helsinki and Helsinki University of Technology. Contest was organized in cooperation with the Association of Professional Graphic Designers in Finland (Grafia), the Finnish Association of Designers (Ornamo) and the Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA) in March, 2 – April, 17, 2009. The purpose of the contest was to produce the basic elements for the visual identity of Aalto University.
The panel of judges selected the entry Kutsu - Invitation as the winner of the contest. Invitation is designed by Rasmus Snabb (b. 1978), a graphic designer and former student of University of Art and Design Helsinki. “The logo stands for a university that is open for discussion, critique and change. The logo is an invitation to discuss and evaluate, to participate in creating the new university. The logo doesn´t have a static visual form, it can be endlessly rearranged and changed”, explains Snabb the idea behind the visual concept.
Aspen Design Challenge is an international contest that, this year, challenged cross-disciplinary students to develop design solutions that encourage responsible water use, provide access to fresh water to those in need and increase awareness about the importance of water conservation.
After reviewing more than 225 projects under the theme Designing Water's Future, the jury chose seven projects as finalists for successfully addressing the challenge in terms of form, context, potential impact and feasibility. Ten projects awarded Honorable Mention for their outstanding design contributions
Your Water concept, developed by Christina Bianchi and Pekka Räty, both studying at the School of design of the University of Art and Design Helsinki , was one of the projects selected as Honorable Mention. Your Water is a multi-vehicle sustainable system of promoting the local resource of tap water.

The brightly coloured fur sweater, designed by Siidaa Aberra, was placed second in the international Remix competition in Milan.
Siidaa Aberra is a third-year clothing design student at the University of Art and Design Helsinki. His mink sweater was presented in the fashion show for young designers at the Copenhagen Fashion Week as well.
Remix is a competition for young designers organized by the International Fur Trade Federation together with the Mifur Fur and Leather Exhibition. The competition was organized for the sixth time this year with 40 young designers from 19 countries participating. Over the years more than 260 designers have taken part in Remix.

Kesän lapsi (Summerchild) by Iris Olsson has been awarded as the best documentary film at the Karach International film festival. Kesän lapsi shared the nomination with Superman of Malagon by Faiza Ahmed Khan. According to the jury both the winning films engage in issues of deprivation and idealism in an inspriring, evocative and multilayered way.
Miika Soini´s film Thomas was double awarded at the 26th Annanay International Film Festival in France: The Special Jury Award and the Young Jury Award.
Thomas premiered last June at the Midnight Sun Film Festival in Finland and has earlier been awarded for the best main actor (Lasse Pöysti) in Turkey. The film is produced by Janne Wringstedt/ Silva Mysterieum.
The winner of Designer´s Nest competition is Sofia Järnefelt, who is studying fashion and clothing design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki. Designer´s Nest is one of the most important design competitions for design students in Nordic countries.
The success of the University of Art and design was completed by Anne Törnroos, who placed third in the competition.
Designer´s Nest competition presented alltogether collections from 23 design students in five Nordic design schools.

Joonas Saari, a fashion design student from the University of Art and Design Helsinki was awarded the main prize, 50 000 DKK in the Designers Nest Competition. Designers Nest is an integral part of the CPH Vison fashion fair and it is one of the most important fashion design competitions aimed at students in the Nordic countries.
A panel of five judges selected the winner. The prize was awarded to the designer who, in the opinion of the judges, demonstrates the most innovative, forward-looking and quality-conscious design.
Students from the University of Art and Design has been very successfull in the Designers Nest competition also earlier. In 2006, Riina Hirvonen won the main prize and in 2007, Kalle Riihivainio was third.

Accidental Lovers is a nominee for International Emmy Award. Accidental Lovers, a co-production of the University of Art and Design Helsinki/Cricible Studio and the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle, is an interactive, dark musical TV-comedy. It explores variations of a love relationship between 61-year-old cabaret singer Juulia (Kristiina Elstelä) and 30 years younger pop star Roope (Lorenz Backman).
Accidental Lovers is directed by Mika Tuomola. The concept and script is originated and written by Leena Saarinen and Mika Tuomola. Editor Minna Nurminen has also higly influenced to the concept during the development work.
Accidental Lovers was shown on the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE Channel 1 in December 2006 – January 2007. Viewers were able to affect the unfolding drama, encouraging, or spoiling, a possible love affair between the two unlikely lovers by sending mobile text messages to the broadcast.
Accidental Lovers achieved a cumulative reach of over 1 million television viewers (Finland has a population of 5,3 million), who sent about 3 000 story thematic text messages.

The Nordic Designprize 2008 was awarded to Samuli Naamanka, alumni of the University of Art and Design Helsinki.
Naamanka was awarded for his Uni chair, manufactured by Avarte Oy. Uni is light and stackable multipurpose chair in which production the spare parts are used in other products.

Medusa light, designed by Mikko Paakkanen, alumni of the University of Art and Design Helsinki, has been awarded among the three best design products in the Forum Aid Competition in Stockholm. Medusa light applies the latest led technique. Paakkanen, nominated as the young designer of the year 2006, is known for his environmental conscious approach to design tasks.
Iris Olsson´s documentary film Summerchild (Kesän lapsi) has won the Tromso Palm award at Tromso International Film Festival in Norway. The Tromso Palm is given to the best short or documentary film in the Films from the North program of the festival.
Summerchild tells the story of Svetlana, an 11-year-old girl living in an orphanage in the Russian Karelia, who gets new godparents from Finland. Svetlana travels to Finland to spend her summer holiday with the Finnish family.
